Community Involvement

Our emphasis is on education. To this end we support the community as follows:

  • Albuquerque Gem & Mineral Club Academic Achievement Award Program: The Club has a special relationship with the state universities that have Earth Sciences programs.

Since the 1960's the club has been awarding monies to acknowledge, encourage, and reward the hard work and excellence of students in the earth sciences field. Now each year we present academic achievement awards to a graduate students in New Mexico Earth Sciences programs at state universities. AGMC’s awardsare open to a deserving graduate student majoring in earth sciences, and the award is based on scholarship. The scholarships are given annually to a graduate student selected by their Department at their school.

Monies for the AGMC awards come primarily from our Annual Gem and Mineral Show and from club auctions. This long standing Club tradition was started in October 1960 with the issuance of one $150 award and over the years has increased to where the club now is giving $1250 awards each year..

The reason this has been possible is because the Club membership and the members’ activities have remained high enough, and provided enough support of shows and auctions, that over the years these scholarship moneys have increased to today’s levels.

  • NM Mineral Symposium: As part of the Club's special relationship with New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, we have been a co-sponsor of the annual mineral symposium in Socorro since 1979.  On the last day of the symposium,  Sunday morning, the club holds a silent auction, the proceeds from which go the the Mineral Museum there on the New Mexico Tech Campus in Socorro.  For more information on the NM Mineral Symposium, click here.
