AGMC Lapidary Staff and Duties

Lapidary Chair:  This individual has the overall responsibility for the smooth operation of the lapidary studio.  They are a voting AGMC board member and keep the board apprised of studio operations.  Through assistants and stewards, the scheduling, coordination, operations, monetary issues, supplies, training, maintenance, and any other administrative issues are managed.  Any major capital expenditures or studio expansion will require AGMC board approval.  Assigning assistants to accomplish various tasks required for the smooth operation of the studio is at the chair’s discretion.

Lapidary Studio Stewards:  These individuals are the core staff of the lapidary studio and are appointed at the discretion of the Lapidary Chair or his designated assistant.  Previously vetted lapidary stewards deemed qualified.

Stewards oversee all daily aspects of the studio. They open and close the studio and are the supervisor on record during their shift.  They maintain records, collect, and document the money, take orders for slab saw cuts, oversee studio cleanliness, and keep an inventory of equipment and supplies, informing the Lapidary Chair or designated assistant when something needs to be ordered.

They are responsible for supervising users and certifying their use of the equipment. Stewards have the authority to shut down equipment and to require any user to leave for violation of safety rules. Stewards assist any users using the equipment and can use the equipment themselves while on duty if supervisory responsibilities are not required. Stewards will also be instructors for new users. This person can be one of the contacts for new people wanting to go through training. They make sure that new users have signed the required paperwork and paid their fees.
